Paper Rusting
A small experience as an aside from the usual practise of calligraphy, the Easter break found some of us trying paper rusting. This process is almost uncontrollable, after dipping our paper in various chemicals, they were left to dry. The chemicals interacted with each other creating organic patterns.
These are some of the chemicals used. We now have piles of paper to look at and use over the winter. Dale is hanging out her sheets and checking the ones that are dry.
Thank you to Diane Johnson who was there with her camera, now we have a record of the day.

First Day Back:  A surprising number of us were ready to get back to calligraphy. Jan Leonard started us really easily by sprinkling some shapes on the floor, I wonder what came next? Then there was a run through the basics and some practise moving letters around with a quote or two. We have homework too and it looks interesting. Jan gave us all a small folded shape and we are to write on a 5cm square with appropriate lettering and bring back to the next meeting, 6.30pm March the 5th at Windmill Road. They will then be exchanged. There is a small charge for this evening, cost for members is $10.
Then we will be under Jan's instruction for the next installment, this one is flourishing, see the earlier post on February 6th for more information.

We have received an urgent request from Larissa McMillan - please contact her directly.

Is it possible to hire a tall (shoulder/head height) calligraphy brush from any members? It is for a professional calligrapher to use, for a commercial advertising the NZSO orchestra – Tan Dun series. It will be shot in Wellington. Please if you can help, if you could contact me as soon as you can, (we shoot beginning of Jan 2013) We will pay for hireage.

Thanks you very much for your time,
Larissa McMillan

Merry Christmas and a
Happy New year to All

A delightful evening was spent at our Christmas get-together at Windmill Road.  My word, the quiz showed up the gap in our memory banks.  So much so, that it was thought that a refresher course in calligraphy fonts, history and calligraphers could be a monthly fare.......for the new year.  It was great to see the Matakana group come all the way down to celebrate with us.   A lovely evening was had by all.

Wayzgoose
The annual get together of the Associated Book Crafts, Auckland Hand printers and the New Zealand Calligraphers. This year it was hosted by the Printers in Ferndale House, Mt Albert. The photos from left to right are, early arrivals waiting outside for the doors to be unlocked on a glorious day, setting up the Adana hand printing presses for everyone to have a go, eating lunch and trying to do the quiz, and finally the men networking.

Greetings One and All

Our Christmas get together and last meeting of the year is on Tuesday evening 4th December, 6.30pm at our new venue, NZ Embroiderer's Guild, 48 Windmill Road, Mt Eden.

Please bring a plate to share. We will have tea, coffee, wine and juice to drink.

Gill Carlsson suggested a good idea. Bring two questions regarding calligraphy to put to the assembled members, and the person with the most correct at the end wins.

There will be a small table set up as a bring and buy, not necessarily calligraphic but at least handmade.

Most importantly:- please bring along a hand made calligraphed card to put into an exchange.

Looking forward to seeing you all.
